August 21st.
Dear Diary,

My name is Lucy. I’m 13 and my whole life turned upside down in a blink of an eye.

I was having the best summer of my life! I spent two months travelling across Europe with my grandparents and cousin Nancy. We visited all the best tourist spots there are. Nancy and I, we’ve always been close, but this trip bonded us like sisters. We became the bestest friends ever! Since we are the same age, we decided we wanted our parents to put us in the same school, and since Westhill High was a lot better, than where Lucy’s been going, we decided she’d have to move to my school. We spent weeks on planning and daydreaming. We were so excited and couldn’t wait to go home and start a school year together. We knew our parents wouldn’t mind. We had it all figured out, and then we went home and that’s when my nightmare began.

I knew something was up as soon as we landed in LAX. Nancy’s parents were right there waiting, all happy to see her. My parents were MIA, which was completely out of their character, especially after such long vacation. I thought of the worst; I feared something had happened to them and I became an orphan. My grandparents reassured me, that my parents were fine, but I still couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen…

As we were pulling in the driveway I noticed moving trucks and guys carrying the furniture and boxes. They were carrying all our stuff out of the house. I figured we were moving to a bigger house or closer to my school or dad’s work, or something. All my worries disappeared as soon as I saw my parents. Thy looked a little tired, but they sure were extremely happy to see me. I was happy to see them too. Mom told me we were going to stay with grandpa and grandma’s for a couple of days. I had so much to tell them, so many stories, and so many photos to go over; I couldn’t stop talking.

We were getting ready to have dinner when my cell rang. It was Nancy. I answered just to tell her I was about to tell my parents about our plan and all I could hear was Nancy screaming through tears.

“ I can’t believe they are doing it to you! I can’t believe they are doing it! Lucy what are we gonna do? What we gonna do?!” – she kept screaming.

“Nancy what are you talking about?! Who’s doing what?!” I was trying to figure out what was going on.

“What do you mean?” – she paused, but I could still hear she was crying hysterically. “Did you not talk to your parents? Did you not go home yet?” she kept asking

“Yes, no, I mean we’re staying at grandpa and grandma’s cause we’re moving somewhere and all our furniture…” I didn’t have a chance to finish.

“Somewhere?! Luc you’re moving to Florida!” she screamed out.

My heart stopped. I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard. I froze, became numb and couldn’t move a finger. I could hear Nancy’s voice, she kept screaming, but I couldn’t focus on what she was saying. I dropped the phone and ran into the dining room.

“We’re moving to Florida?!” I was hoping my mom would smile and say something like – “no silly, we’re moving a couple of blocks away”, but instead my mom looked at me clearly worried, then looked at my dad and he said:

“We were going to tell you after dinner…”

He was explaining something about great opportunity, fabulous life in Miami and sunny beaches but all I could hear was “We’re going to rip your heart out of your chest, cook it and serve it to the dogs”.

And that’s how my dream life became my worst nightmare. I was moving thousands of miles away from all that have been my world for the past 13 years. I only had a couple of days to say goodbye to everyone I loved so much, including my “sister” Nancy.
I don’t think I will ever stop crying…
